We are Prioritising the
WELL-BEING of African Mums
like it has never been done before

The Issue

African Mums face additional hidden, layered and intersecting barriers associated with motherhood and their gendered role as caregivers. These barriers negatively affect their well-being and prevent them from fully pursuing their career and professional dreams without losing out on the joys of motherhood.

Our Vision

To promote a society where Mums are valued beyond their caregiving role and supported as leaders who can contribute to decision-making across different spheres of African society

Individual

Individual Barriers

Insufficient education, skills, motivation, emotional well-being, aspirations, changing bodies.

Societal

Societal Barriers

Gender norms, religion, cultural and societal expectations, policies.

Interpersonal

Interpersonal Barriers

Limited network and support from others e.g family members, partners etc, child disability

Organisational

Organisational Barriers

Inadequate organisational support and opportunities e.g childcare, flexible working conditions and pay gap.

Why is this important?

  • First, Mums’ well-being MATTERS!
  • Emotional factors involved in caregiving need more attention
  • The negative impacts of the emotional factors that African Mums experience need more attention. These include:
    • Increased stress
    • Poor mental well-being
    • Poor parental and child relationship
    • Poor family, friendship and work relationships
    • Inability to operate at optimal capacity leading to the abandonment of career dreams.

We don’t see the data on these issues because Mums stay SILENT. Things need to change for the BETTER.

Our Transformative Approach

TOGETHER WITH MUMS & ALLIES

To fully recognise the rights of women in Africa , we must prioritise Mums' well-being by:

Actively Listening to their Voices

Providing Meaningful Support

Implementing Enabling Laws

Enabling Male Involvement

Motherhood requires sacrifices but, Mums should not be THE SACRIFICE.

My Story

My career journey started in the financial services sector in 2004 and was filled with promise. I was unstoppable! But things took a difficult turn when I decided to start a family. Nothing…ABSOLUTELY NOTHING prepared me for the life I was about to begin.
